About
The Community Foundation
of South Alabama
The Community
Foundation of South Alabama was formed in 1975 and incorporated in
1976 as The Mobile Community Foundation – an Alabama Not for Profit Corporation. Sheltered initially by
United Way, which supported the work of The Community Foundation’s
operating fund, the newly formed public foundation was designed to
complement
the work of United Way by providing grants to agencies other than social
service organizations.
In
1994, The Mobile Community Foundation changed its name to The Community
Foundation of South Alabama in recognition of its service to eight
counties throughout South Alabama. Historically, The Community Foundation’s
Board of Directors has been a roster of our region’s philanthropists,
civic leaders, and business professionals. The Board seeks to draw
from the strengths of the diverse population found in South Alabama
in designing and funding innovative programs that meet important community
needs.
The mission of The
Community Foundation is to strengthen the future of non-profit organizations in Southwest Alabama by encouraging gifts, large and small from all segments of the community. Serving as responsible stewards of these
donations,
The
Foundation makes grants to non-profit organizations in the fields of
arts and recreation, education, social services, health, community,
civic, environment, and
others. Gifts to our Community Endowment Fund allows The Foundation to respond
quickly to the needs of our growing community, providing leadership
and
direction through proactive grants to non-profit organizations through
South Alabama.
