Guest Speaker - Stephen Black
Mr. Black is the Director of the Center for Ethics and Social Responsibility at The University of Alabama. He is also the Founder of Impact Alabama, a nonprofit organization which promotes student service projects that actively engage young citizens in their community. SaveFirst, is an Impact Alabama program which trains college, graduate and law students to provide free tax preparation services to low-income, working families.
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs offer free assistance to low and moderate income families as well as those with limited English proficiency and disabilities. The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a refundable federal income tax credit for working families with earned income less than $49,000. EITC provides a maximum tax credit of up to $5,657. Approximately 25% of qualified recipients are unaware of their eligibility.
The Community Foundation of South Alabama through its community economic development initiative is one of the lead agencies for the Alabama Asset Building Coalition of South Alabama which focuses upon Financial Literacy, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Individual Development Accounts.
