Meeting
Summary
November 4
YGAB members met on Saturday, November 4, 2006 at the Drug
Education Council office on Television Avenue, from 10:00
am to 12:00 pm. Students were asked to introduce themselves
to each other, finding out one fact about each other. Ms.
Lisa Hirsch convened the meeting, welcoming everyone and
explaining the goal of YGAB. She presented a short video
on philanthropy, explaining the word’s meaning as well
as for-profit and non-profit businesses.
Ms. Barbara Johnson, Clearing House Manager at the Drug Education
Council, gave a short presentation on the services of the Council,
giving literature to all students.
Ms. Janine Phillips distributed the 2007 Syllabus to the students
and introduced the first task of grant making, taking a community
needs assessment. Each student was asked to call several nonprofits
from a list (that was emailed to them later) and ask the Director
or Development Director five questions regarding community
needs. A script was also provided for students to follow. They
were also encouraged to ask the same five questions to community
leaders and/or visit friendly neighborhoods to observe needs.
Ms. Phillips asked them to bring their findings to the next
meeting when they will collectively define an initiative for
the year.
Service project: Ms. Hirsch asked students to bring an inexpensive,
unwrapped gift for a child at the December meeting. YGAB will
select a nonprofit that helps children and take gifts to them
at another time.
